Cysts

Dr. Brown LOVES removing cysts and works on them all the time!  She performs a special procedure in the office that doesn't require full surgery nor sutures.  This quick process wth local numbing medicine and a small incision is a permanent solution for most cysts without leaving a large, unsightly scar.  However, some cysts may rarely occur and require  further treatment.

Sebaceous cysts are the most common type of cysts that we see in the skin.  These occur when the pore becomes clogged and can't drain the normal oil material (sebum).  This leads to a backup of sebum and causes the oil gland to fill up, expand under the skin surface and enlarge.  Sebaceous cysts are commonly seen on the back, neck, and face, but can occur anywhere.  They are harmless and don't typically require urgent removal.  Sometimes they drain or rupture and may release "fragrant" ricotta cheese-like contents.

If a cyst ruptures or becomes painful or inflamed, then it's time to have it treated in the office.  When you schedule your appointment, please let us know if it is an urgent matter.  We can also remove bohersome or enlarging cysts in the office with a small procedure which doesn't require sutures.

Pilar cysts are similar growths that occur most commonly on the scalp.  These form when a hair follicle becomes clogged.  Interestingly, the contents of this type of cyst don't have a foul smell.  Some patients may have a genetic tendency to grow numerous pilar cysts on the scalp.  Removing these wth a small procedure rather than a full surgery (excision) leaves a much smaller scar with minimal to  no loss of hair.  With the method we perform in the office, there is no need to shave the surrounding hair or place sutures.
