Belotero is a  hyaluronic acid injectable filler that has been FDA approved for treating etched-in lines and wrinkles while maintaining normal movement and facial expressions.

Where can Belotero be injected?

  • Fines lines around the lips
  • To gently plump the lips for a natural look
  • Fine, superficial lines on the forehead or cheeks
  • Fine lines on the neck

What are the side effects?

Side effects are typically mild and are similar to all other filler injections.  They include swelling, redness, tenderness, and bruising.  Of note, if you have a history of cold sores of the lip area, you MUST begin an antiviral pill (such as valacyclovir or acyclovir) on the day of treatment to prevent a large flare of the virus.  This protocol applies to any fillers or procedures which involve the lip area.

Is there any pain involved with injections?

We typically apply a strong topical numbing ointment for about 40 minutes prior to injections to minimize any discomfort.  (Bring a book or laptop while you wait for the numbing effect).  Typical injection areas are tolerated very well.  However, the lips CAN be more sensitive.  If you are concerned about pain with the lips, please ask us to schedule 1 hour of numbing when you make your appointment.  Alternately, we will be happy to give you numbing injections inside the mouth to completely block the pain.  Please note that numbing injections can cause more swelling and longer lasting numbness in the mouth area.

How do I know which filler to make an appointment for?

Dr. Brown and her staff will be able to help guide you in choosing the proper filler for a particular area.  If you are not sure what you need, or if you have many questions and would like further information, please call to make a cosmetic consultation.

Who performs the procedure?

Dr. Brown only.  She has been injecting Belotero since it first became available in the U.S. well over a decade ago.  She is board-certified in Dermatology and has had extensive training in her specialty.
