Say goodbye to your double chin forever!
Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injection to improve the appearance of excess fat below the chin, also known as “double chin.” When injected, the active ingredient in Kybella permanently destroys the fat cells in the double chin area over the course of weeks to months.
We understand that many factors out of your control, such as family genetics and aging, can cause a double chin. No matter how much you diet and exercise, that extra chin isn’t going anywhere. Before Kybella was approved, the only good treatment option was surgical liposuction. Now, specially trained dermatologists and plastic surgeons finally have a noninvasive method with minimal side effects and little downtime.
What is Kybella?
Kybella contains deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring bile acid in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat layer under the skin, it causes permanent destruction of the fat cells. Once these cells are destroyed, the effect should be permanent unless additional fat is added to the body (from gaining weight overall).
What is each treatment like?
The treatments themselves take about 15-20 minutes to perform and involve anywhere from 15 to 50 small injections, depending on the amount of fat to be dissolved. These injections are performed with a tiny needle, similar to that used with Botox. Kybella injections may cause a stinging sensation or warmth in the skin during treatment. However, patients report that Kybella is not near as painful as laser hair removal or chemical peels.
How many treatment sessions does it take?
Most patients experience results in two to four treatment sessions, administered once a month. Some patients will need up to six treatments. Because each patient is different, we provide a consultation prior to treatment in order to devise an individualized plan. Please schedule a free cosmetic consultation with Elena if you would like to discuss this or other options.
How soon will I see results?
The process of destroying fat cells with injections (or anything else for that matter) is not immediate. Results improve slowly over time and are most noticeable about a month after the last treatment.
What are the side effects?
The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain or discomfort, numbness, redness, and firmness in the treatment area. Swelling and bruising are typically expected, and it is advisable to plan your social and work calendar accordingly. You may return to work and normal activities immediately, but it is best to avoid strenuous exercise for the next day or two. In the original clinical studies, injections with Kybella have rarely caused trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can cause facial muscle weakness. These effects resolved with time and were not permanent.
I have sagging skin under my chin. Will Kybella help to tighten that?
Kybella is ideal for dissolving the excess fat cells of the double chin, but it will not help to tighten the sagging skin (a.k.a. turkey neck). Patients with loose skin should consider surgery or non-invasive body contouring as an option.
Who should not receive Kybella injections?
Do not undergo Kybella if you have a current infection in the treatment area, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you currently have trouble swallowing. Before having the treatment, it is important to tell Dr. Brown if you are on blood thinners, if you have bleeding problems, or if you have had or plan to have surgery to the face, neck, or chin.
Is Kybella guaranteed to work on my double chin?
Unfortunately, no treatment in medicine is effective in every single person. In 20 clinical studies with more than 2600 patients, 79% of the treated patients were happy with their results with Kybella. In our office, we always try to evaluate patients prior to treatment in order to ensure that they are good candidates for Kybella.
Can I have Kybella injected into other fatty areas on they body?
Kybella has only been studied and approved for treating the double chin area at this time.
